iPhone Finally Debuts in China

After much speculation, China Unicom, one of China's three telecom carriers, announced on September 28 that it would began selling iPhone handsets online from October 1, priced between RMB 5,999 and RMB 7,399 ($1=RMB6.8) via eight packages. These packages, ranging from RMB 126 to 886, include 450MB to 4GB of mobile data access, 120 to 880 SMS messages, 15 to 95 MMS messages, and between 320 to 3,000 minutes of voice.

The Chinese version iPhone is unique around the iPhone world offererings due to the removal of its Wi-Fi modules. Chinese telecom authorities had not yet permitted Wi-Fi on mobile phones until this year, when it began allowing handsets that support a domestically developed security protocol for wireless LANs. However, according to a sina.com report, Apple was reluctant to conform to the Chinese WLAN standard so it decided to scrap that function.

A month earlier, China Unicom announced a 3-year deal with Apple to offer the iPhone in China, and listed the 8GB, 16GB and 32GB versions of the iPhone 3GS as models it would launch in a document posted on its website. The iPhone 3GS supports WCDMA, one of the three 3G standards officially approved in China, and solely operated by China Unicom. The other two mobile carriers, China Mobile and China Telecom, operate the homegrown TD-SCDMA standard and CDMA2000 respectively. tech.sina.com.cn, 9/28/2009

USITO Notes: The gadget finally had its Chinese debut, making Apple fanboys and 3G lovers jubilant and excited. Unfortunately to most of them the prices turned out much higher than expected, which may weaken the phone's market competitiveness. Actually, the iPhone, either 2G or 3G versions, have already been very popular among Chinese young mobile subscribers. All of those phones are of course smuggled ones or brought back to the mainland from abroad.

Wold top tech companies are all targeting China as a huge growth vehicles for the future, and it is more so in the smart phone sector, given the country's 1.4 billion population and not yet saturated mobile market. Due to iPhone's exclusive deal with one Chinese carrier, the competition over smart phones on the ground are growingly hot. Official sources from China Mobile claimed a few months earlier that there were around one million iPhones in its networks; experts doubted the carrier's underlying assumption might be "iPhone will not be hit in the China market".

A few days earlier China Mobile has just launched to the market the Android based-smart phones like the HTC Magic. It was said that the Chinese authorities had attempted to hold back the Apple-Unicom deal until China Mobile has a competing product against iPhone, since China Mobile's TD-SCDMA as a national strategic 3G standard must always receive policy preference.

It is also not a surprise to see the non-Wi-Fi iPhone. Chinese telecom authorities had not yet permitted Wi-Fi on mobile phones until May 2009, when they ruled handsets supporting WAPI, the homegrown WLAN security protocol, could be licensed for sale. Survey Shows U.S. Firms Confident About China

According to a China Daily report on 10/9/2009, a recent poll by the US-China Business Council showed that most U.S. compaies are upbeat on their China business. The poll stated 51% of the 100 respondents projected their revenues in China would grow in 2009, and 84% said their China operations remained profitable.

The China Daily report stated that the survey was done this summer, when global economic data was still looking dim after the financial crisis plunged the world into its worst recession in decades. However, the survey indicated that business opportunities from China's massive stimulus package have not yet been realized by the majority of companies, although those in certain sectors, such as infrastructure-related industries, benefited from stimulus project spending. The survey also cited a number of issues that U.S. firms in China regard as problems, such as business licensing and intellectual property rights protection. China Daily, 10/9/2009

USITO Notes: U.S. firms shall also be alerted with the challenging macro trade environment. As part of the retaliation to the tire and steel pipe cases, China has begun to take a series of measures to restrict trade with U.S., such as on 9/27/2009 the Ministry of Commerce formally launched an anti-dumping and anti-subsidy probe into U.S. chicken part imports. If justified, it would force U.S. chicken out of China for a long time and impact the confidence of U.S. firms to some extent. In Addition, China's current economic upbeat is largely contributed to the huge government stimulus plans and excessive bank lendings. There are much debate about whether this short term recipe could work effectively in stimulating sustainable consumption.
