NDRC to Investigate Telecom and 3 Other Industries for Monopoly Practices

On Aug. 16th, Sina News reported that Mr. Xu Kunlin, Director-General of the Price Investigation and Anti-Monopoly Bureau of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), announced an investigation into companies in the automobile, banking, oil and telecommunication sectors.

Sina News suggested anti-trust investigations for monopoly practices have proven ineffective at curving illegal behavior, pointing to the case two years ago in which the NDRC conducted an investigation into China Telecom and China Unicom for illegal broadband access monopoly practices.  Both were found guilty, but have since failed to carry out promised reforms.
