MIIT Plan Aims to Triple Robotics Production in Three Years

On April 27, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)published a 5-Year Robotics Development Plan, jointly issued alongside theNational Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF). In addition to calling for breakthroughs in China's robotics components and overall integrated capabilities, the plan also projects a tripling in China's robotics production over the coming 5 years.

Detailed implementation measures for the plan have not been released, but the plan includes six core principles:

  • Strengthen resource allocation and planning
  • Increase financial and tax-related support for robotics development
  • Broaden the channels for robotics enterprise fundraising
  • Help cultivate a healthy consumer marketplace
  • Attract leading global talent into the industry
  • Increase international collaboration

The high-level principles follow closely in the mold of the June 2014 Integrated Circuit Industry Promotion Guidelines, calling for greater indigenous innovation capabilities and cultivation of globally leading "indigenous Chinese robotics brands".
