Ambassador Hosts IPR Roundtable on Trademarks

On May 6, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing hosted the first session of the 2016 Ambassador's Intellectual Property Rights Roundtable on the theme of "Trademarks: Building Global Brands". The event brought together more than 150 government officials, academics and business leaders from the U.S. and China to discuss trademark issues. The keynote speech delivered on behalf of the U.S. Ambassador to China, Max Baucus, highlighted the need for continued cooperation and increased trust between the U.S. and China in order strengthen trademark and brand protection. The Vice Commissioner of the State Administration of Industry and Commerce (SAIC), Liu Junchen, also joined the roundtable and emphasized the importance of U.S.- China cooperation for trademark protection as China's market capacity continues to grow. 
 

The roundtable featured three panels: 

  • "Working Together to Build and Protect Global Brands", which focused on the importance of trademark protection in business development 
  • "Registering Your Trademark in China: New Issues and Strategies Under China's Amended Trademark Law", which discussed how the new law will influence judicial and business practices as well as enterprises' strategy in trademark protection 
  • "Enforcing Your Trademark in China: Collaborating to Develop an Effective Strategy", which focused on the challenges of IPR enforcement
