USITO and Amcham-Shanghai Jointly Hosted Three-Network Convergence Event
On June 3, 2010, USITO and AmCham Shanghai jointly hosted an event on 3-network convergence in Shanghai.
In executive meeting of the State Council held on January 13, 2010, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called for acceleration of the integration of the three communications networks: telecommunications network, TV and radio network, and the Internet. The three-network convergence initiative was first raised as early as 1998. Since then this initiative has been articulated in the country’s “9th Five-Year Plan”, “10th Five-Year Plan” and the “11th Five-Year Plan”. Over the past years many pilot projects have taken place across the country.
The event featured Mr. Li Huaiyu, CEO of BesTV. During the event Mr. Li introduced that Shanghai has been exploring network convergence under government approval. The city has been promoting IPTV since 2005, and by December 2009, Shanghai Telecom had announced its IPTV users had reached to one million. In order to enable our members stay tuned in this national convergence drive, we will host a "3-Network Convergence" event in Shanghai. He also shared his knowledge on China's ongoing three-network convergence drive and the policy trend, his invaluable experiences with Shanghai's IPTV business offerings, as well as his perspective on foreign company’s opportunities in this greatly potential sector. After the 30-minute speech, Mr. Li took questions from the participants for the convergence topic.
Mr. Li Huaiyu is the CEO of BesTV ,a joint venture by Shanghai Media Group (SMG) and Tsing Hua Tong Fang Corp, also China’s leading diversified IPTV New Media service provider and operator. Li led BesTV to establish the IP TV market in Shanghai and Harbin. He has managed to build BesTV to become the leader of China IPTV by pushing new forms of ‘3 Network Convergence’. Li was in the cable broadband network business since 1996, led the first Shanghai Commercial Broadband Online Service Project “Cable Link”. Li became the head of Oriental Broadband Co, and developed creative network-TV interactive network society service; successful shows include “My show”.
