“Defending the Cyberspace: Securing and making resilient the national critical information infrastructure”

8:00 – 9:30 AM, Mar. 25th, 2010 (Thursday)

Music Room, the Capital Club

(京城大厦50层京城俱乐部音乐厅)

USITO and AmCham-China's IT/Telecom Forum are pleased to invite you to our ongoing breakfast briefing series, this month featuring Mr. Ilias Chantzos of Symantec.

During the meeting Mr. Chantzos is going to talk about emerging cyber-security challenges and global developments particularly in Europe to defend the cyber space amidst the rise in cyber-attacks globally.

Defending the Cyberspace and critical information infrastructure, particularly the national Internet infrastructure, is becoming one of the top priorities for all governments.  High-profile cases of large-scale denial-of-service attacks and stealthier network penetrations have shown without doubt that security and resilience of Cyberspace is a priority of governments worldwide.  Ilias will share his insights into the challenges that Cyberspace presents to governments and critical infrastructure operators, what governments in the United States, European Union and United Kingdom are doing to meet these challenges, and what companies should do to secure and make resilient their critical IT assets.

Mr. Chantzos is Director of Symantec’s Government Relations and Public Affairs programs for Europe, Middle East & Africa as well as the Asia Pacific and Japan regions.  He is based in Brussels.  Chantzos represents Symantec before government bodies, national authorities and international organizations advising on public policy issues with particular regard to IT security and data risk management and availability.

Prior to joining Symantec in 2004, Chantzos worked as legal and policy officer in the Directorate General Information Society of the European Commission focusing on information security policy.  He covered the council of Europe Cybercrime Convention and the Framework Decision on Attacks against Information Systems.  In addition, he managed a number of EU legislative initiatives relevant to information society and security, including directives on Privacy on Electronic Communications, the Data Retention Directive and the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).  He also represented the European Commission in various international debates and conferences.

Chantzos holds a law degree from the University of Thessaloniki and a Masters degree in Computers and Communication Law from the University of London and is a member of the Athens Bar.  He serves as a member of the Executive Board of TechAmerica Europe and appointed member of the Permanent Stakeholders Group of ENISA for a second consecutive term.  Chantzos chaired for two consecutive terms the executive policy council of the Business Software Alliance, Europe.  He speaks Greek, English, Dutch and German and is a member of the Oostakker Kickboxing Club and the Greek Circle, a thought leadership club in Brussels.
