The United States Information Technology Office (USITO) and AmCham-China's IT/Telecom Forum are pleased to invite you to its very first breakfast briefing in 2010 featuring Merry Beekman who is the director for global field marketing at Red Hat, on the topic of cloud computing.
On one hand that the feature of cloud computing shows lots of cores for huge processing power, very large memory capabilities and small space/power requirements, the benefits of clouds are well understood by most CIOs and IT managers. However, the barriers to widespread cloud adoption are also becoming clear. One of the most important barriers relates to cloud standards or, the other side of the same coin, the need to avoid any sort of vendor lock-in. Clearly, until cloud standards are established and accepted by cloud service providers, customers are likely to limit their usage of cloud computing, reducing its potential value. Other barriers range from technical to operational to business issues. Open Source technology provides the foundation for many of today's cloud computing deployments, and will be an important driver for the future of the cloud,With the high levels of customer interest around cloud computing and the importance of open source technology as part of this evolving computing paradigm, we see there are successful clouds available today, there is still a lot of work to be done before cloud computing is appropriate for a wide range of deployments.
Merry Beekman has over 20 years of experience in the computer software field. During this time, she has held numerous positions including product management and field marketing. In her current role at Red Hat, she is responsible for worldwide go-to-market strategy for our strategic marketing programs.
In her previous role as Director of Public Sector Marketing, Merry was primarily responsible for direct and partner go-to-market strategies for Red Hat in Public Sector. In addition she was responsible for insuring that the company's products met the Government's requirements especially in the areas of security and software assurance.
Prior to Red Hat she was with Micros Systems, the leader in hospitality information systems for 14 years during which time she held positions in R&D and technical support.
Merry received a BS in computer and information sciences from the University of Maryland, University College and a MA in computer systems management from the University of Maryland, University College.
